Deep Sedation for a Fully Asleep, Pain-Free Experience

General Anesthesia in Summit, NJ

For some procedures — or certain patients — full unconscious sedation is the safest, most comfortable option. General anesthesia allows you to sleep through your treatment without awareness, pain, or memory of the procedure. At Prism Oral Surgery & Implants of Summit, we offer in-office general anesthesia for qualified patients, delivered and monitored by trained professionals. Whether you need complex oral surgery or simply want complete comfort, we’ll walk you through every step.

When Is General Anesthesia Recommended?

We may recommend general anesthesia for:

  • Complex surgical procedures (e.g. wisdom teeth removal, jaw surgery)
  • Multiple procedures completed in one visit
  • Patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia
  • Children or adults with special healthcare needs
  • Cases where other sedation methods aren’t sufficient

If you're unsure whether you need general anesthesia or another sedation method, we’ll review your medical history and treatment plan to determine the safest and most effective approach.

How It Works

Here’s what to expect if you’re scheduled for general anesthesia:

  1. Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation: We review your medical history, medications, and any previous experiences with anesthesia. This includes reviewing lab work or clearance from your physician if needed.
  2. Day of Procedure: You’ll receive anesthesia through an IV. Once asleep, your vitals are monitored continuously by our surgical and anesthesia team throughout the procedure.
  3. Post-Treatment Recovery: After the procedure, you’ll rest in our recovery area until you’re fully alert. A trusted adult must drive you home and monitor you for the rest of the day.

You’ll receive full pre- and post-op instructions so you know exactly how to prepare and recover safely.

Your Safety Is Our Priority

Dr. Jean Kim, DDS is a Board-Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon with advanced training in general anesthesia and surgical safety. Our office follows strict protocols and uses modern monitoring equipment to ensure your experience is safe and smooth from start to finish.

We also offer additional options for lighter sedation — including IV sedation, nitrous oxide, and oral conscious sedation — if general anesthesia isn’t required.
